Training Frequently Asked Questions
  • 1. What type of health cover is required whilst students are in Australia?

Australia has a special system of health cover for international students studying in Australia. This is called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and, with the exception of students from Sweden and Norway, all students are required to have this for the duration of their student visa in Australia. Altara Training will assist all students apply for OSHC as required. This entails the student completing the required application form and paying the applicable premium to the chosen provider. There are currently 4 providers of OSHC in Australia:

    1. Medibank Private.
    2. Lysaght sub contracting to OSHC Worldcare.
    3. BUPA Australia.
    4. OSHC, sub-contracting to Australian Health Management Group.

If the student comes to Australia on a visa other than a student visa and undertakes a short course of study of three months duration or less you will not be eligible for OSHC. In this instance Altara Training recommends students purchase travel or private medical insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia.

OSHC costs depend on how long the student will be in Australia. Premiums vary depending on the health fund but generally they start from AUD$75 for three months insurance (AUD$312 a year). If the student’s spouse and/or dependant children are accompanying them to Australia then they will then need to pay for a family premium. Students must pay their OSHC premium before coming to Australia.

When the student arrives in Australia they must confirm their OSHC membership with their chosen OSHC provider. The chosen OSHC provider will need to see the student’s passport for identification purposes and to ensure that the dates of their cover are correct.

OSHC cover is required for the full period of the students stay in Australia.

Benefits are not paid during any period when OSHC membership lapses.

OSHC covers most medical expenses and the cost of hospital care which international students may need while in Australia. OSHC will also pay for most prescription drugs and emergency ambulance transport.

Dental and optometry costs are not included but students may also take out additional cover.

For more detailed information on OSHC benefits and costs visit the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care website or contact the health funds offering OSHC.
